Drytac SpotOn SynPaper speeds into the future at Shell Eco-marathon

Bristol UK; July 23, 2018: Drytac’s SpotOn SynPaper felt the need for speed at Shell’s Eco-marathon in London this month, where it was used for eye-catching vehicle graphics on innovative racing car designs.

The Shell Eco-marathon brought together 143 teams of young engineers from 24 countries at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from July 5th to 8th 2018, where they put their STEM skills to the test to attempt record-breaking levels of energy efficiency in one-seater cars. The event was covered live on social media, with viewers around the world able to see the skills of drivers and technicians close-up.

As a main sponsor for the event, HP provided all the PC and printing equipment for the student teams to produce their own graphics, including an HP PageWide XL large-format printer running Drytac’s SpotOn SynPaper. As a product designed specifically for this HP system, SpotOn SynPaper was the material of choice for the vehicle decals speeding around the track.

A printable, matte white, self-adhesive film, SpotOn SynPaper has been developed to be incredibly easy to apply with a bubble-free finish – which meant the Eco-marathon teams could install their graphics themselves. The cars were made from a variety of materials, including polystyrene and silk fibres, in order to achieve the highest speeds with the lowest amount of energy.

Drytac has also ensured that SpotOn SynPaper, as a polypropylene film, is recyclable – in keeping with the sustainability ethos of Shell’s Eco-marathon programme.

In addition to one-off uses such as the car stickers at the Eco-marathon event, SpotOn SynPaper is ideal for vibrant short-term wall and window applications like seasonal retail promotions and trade show graphics. It is simple and clean to remove, thanks to its smart dot pattern and pressure-sensitive polyacrylate adhesive.

“The Shell Eco-marathon was a really exciting event with the innovation of the teams matched by the speeds of the cars,” comments Shaun Holdom, Global Product Manager for Drytac.

“We love to see unusual applications for our products and Drytac SpotOn SynPaper graphics, printed on HP PageWide XL technology, worked brilliantly on the track. The event was all about the energy-efficient cars of the future, making it a great setting for our advanced graphics media.”

Drytac SpotOn SynPaper was designed specifically for the HP PageWide XL printer, but also produces excellent results with aqueous and UV inkjet printers, delivering six months’ durability for interior applications. The 120 micron (4.7 mil)-thick material is available in 1,016mm (164’) wide rolls.

Poppy Signs blooms with Drytac Protac Anti-Scratch Laminate

Bristol, UK; June 25, 2018: Chorley-based Poppy Signs has been converted to Drytac’s Protac Anti-Scratch laminate, following its installation at the offices of theidol.com, a web-based insurance provider based in Penrith, Cumbria.

Dave McDonald, Managing Director of Poppy Signs, explains: “We recently carried out a job on an internal glass partition for theidol.com that was finished with a regular clear laminate. Unfortunately, the surface scuff marks left by the squeegees looked really obvious, unsightly and didn’t fade out as we would normally expect after a few days. We are fully focused on customer service and do everything we can to ensure our customers have the best possible graphics solution, so clearly this wasn’t good enough.”

Poppy Signs decided to trial Drytac’s Protac Anti-Scratch laminate instead. David McDonald continues: “In our tests at the workshop it was hard to make any marks whatsoever – whatever we tried attacking it with!”

Following the successful testing of the Drytac film, Poppy Signs returned to the customer to replace the graphics. “We stripped the glass partition and reapplied the whole graphic, this time finishing it with Drytac Protac Anti-Scratch laminate. The end result was stunning – and didn’t leave the slightest application mark on the material surface. The customer is extremely happy with the new graphics.”

Drytac Protac Anti-Scratch PVC laminate is suitable for indoor and outdoor displays in high-traffic areas and for graphics displayed under direct lighting. The high coat-weight and strength of the adhesive makes Protac ideal for laminating over UV inks, as well as solvent, eco-solvent and latex prints.

Available in 75µ and 100µ coat weights and a crystal-clear gloss finish or a non-glare matte finish, Drytac’s Protac Anti-Scratch has a non-marking, anti-scratch surface to prevent damage and blemishes, whilst at the same time offering UV protection when used for outdoor applications.

Since first using Drytac Protac Anti-Scratch, Poppy Signs is now using it for all graphics applications that require a durable scratch-resistant finish. David McDonald concludes: “Poppy Signs is now a convert to Drytac laminates. The laminate is very durable and we have full confidence in its scratch-resistance – even for more demanding installations. This product really does do what it says on the tin!”

Drytac ViziPrint adds vibrancy to highlight Courageous heARTS’ charitable cause

Drytac, an international manufacturer of self-adhesive materials for the print, label and industrial markets, has donated its ViziPrint Impress media to help Courageous heARTS, a Minneapolis based charity, to create a stunning window display for its youth workshop.

Courageous heARTS is a non-profit organization in the USA with a vision to offer a safe space for young people to co-create art, build community and develop into leaders. Founded by Lindsay Walz in 2013 – after surviving the devastating 2007 35W Bridge collapse and finding art therapy in her own journey to healing – Courageous HeARTS’ vision is to provide a safe space for young people to express themselves through art.

In March 2018, Drytac reseller Standard Dynamics and local print business Image360 teamed up to sponsor a storefront makeover to highlight the Courageous heARTS charitable cause and its mission to ‘Create, Connect, Lead’. The formerly anonymous storefront space has now been transformed with dazzling, bright graphics.

The window graphics are printed on Drytac ViziPrint Impress PET film using an OKI ColorPainter M-64s and incorporated collaborative artwork created by Courageous heARTS members. The film is easy to apply and easy to remove and is suitable for application onto glass, acrylic and other non-porous surfaces. It is ideal for creating high quality graphics for retail storefronts, POP and backlit displays, privacy and decorative glass applications, and much more

Courageous heARTS founder, Lindsay Walz, is ‘thrilled’ with the new window front. She comments: “We have already experienced a surge in foot traffic since the new signs went up and the name recognition we have developed within the community is now connected to our physical space.

“The storefront now expresses the same vibrant energy that everyone experiences inside the colorful studio space.”

Service Graphics and Drytac® Score at Wembley with Rugby World Cup Work

Service Graphics, the St Ives Group-owned large format printer, has selected Drytac’s ReTac Smooth 150 permanently peelable film for wall graphics applications for a prestigious Rugby World Cup 2015 branding project at Wembley Stadium.

The extensive work – which totalled 3,500 sq m of graphics – was printed and installed in nine days. The resulting graphics will remain in place throughout the tournament, which ends on October 31.

John Dooley, Account Director at Service Graphics, explained: “As the incumbent graphics supplier to Wembley Stadium, we were invited to pitch for the project to rebrand the exterior of the venue for the Rugby World Cup 2015. We won the contract and were responsible for printing and installing all exterior graphics, while ensuring that all non-tournament branding was covered up.”

“To meet the requirements set out by Wembley Stadium – and given the high-profile nature of the project – we needed a printable film that would stay in position, have no show through, could guarantee a clean removal and carried a Class 0 Fire Rating.”

This 150µ matte white polymeric PVC is coated on one side with a pressure-sensitive permanently peelable adhesive and has been specifically designed for high vibrant print quality graphics. The film is printable by solvent, eco-solvent, HP Latex, and UV inkjet techniques, and is easy to apply and easy to remove or move.

The thickness of the ReTac Smooth 150 material lends itself perfectly to rigid print applications and – with its Class 0 Fire Rating – is ideal for applications in public areas requiring compliance with strict fire regulations.

Dooley added: “We received samples of Drytac ReTac Smooth 150 for testing. The results confirmed that ReTac Smooth 150 was the right product to meet our requirements.”

Once printed, the giant graphics were applied by Service Graphics’ installation team using a mechanical platform. Dooley said: “The installation of Drytac’s ReTac Smooth 150 film was incredibly straightforward and ultimately the decision-makers at Wembley Stadium were thrilled with the results.”

Steve Broad, Sales Director for Drytac Europe, commented: “We’re delighted that ourReTac Smooth 150 film was selected for such a prestigious and high-profile project. It has been designed to meet the precision needs of companies such as Service Graphics and is becoming ever-more popular among our customer base. This high-quality film is easy to apply, easy to remove and – crucially – leaves zero residue.”
